In urban polls, AIADMK, DMK push NEET at forefront of their campaigns

CHENNAI: The ruling DMK and the opposition AIADMK have made the National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test (NEET) for admission to the MBBS degree a key issue in the upcoming municipal elections in Chennai.

In a speech addressing party candidates and the public in the Salem municipal corporation elections, Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS), the leader of the opposition in the Tamil Nadu Assembly and the AIADMK's coordinator, slammed the DMK, saying that the party came to power promising to abolish the NEET exam. Palaniswami further said that the DMK was unable to abolish NEET after gaining office.

According to EPS, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin promised the people of Tamil Nadu as an opposition leader that he would sign the file to abolish NEET "as soon as he gets office," but nothing has happened since the DMK took power in May 2021.

The AIADMK leader stated that the DMK was a political party that deceived the people of Tamil Nadu by making promises it couldn't keep. He said that NEET was launched by the Congress government at the time, and that Gulam Nabi Azad was the Union health minister at the time. He further claimed that the AIADMK was responsible for the delay in the implementation of NEET exams in Tamil Nadu, which was later overturned by a Supreme Court judgement.
