New Delhi: According to official data released on Saturday, about 5.89 crore Income Tax Returns (ITRs) have been filed until December 31, 2021, the extended due date for ITRs for the fiscal year 2020-21. On December 31, more than 46.11 lakh ITRs were filed in a single day. The Finance Ministry said in a statement that "about 45.7 percent of these ITRs were filed utilising the online ITR form on the site, while the rest were uploaded using the ITR prepared from the offline software utility." In comparison, the total number of ITRs filed as of January 10, 2021 (the extended due date for ITRs for AY 2020-21) was 5.95 crore, with 31.05 lakh ITRs filed on the last day, i.e. on January 10, 2021, compared to over 46.11 lakh ITRs filed on the last day this year.
