India opposes environmental index that ranked it lowest among 180 countries

NEW DELHI: India has objected to the Environmental Performance Index (EPI) 2022 report, which ranks India lowest out of 180 countries in terms of managing climate change, environmental health, and ecosystem vitality. Researchers from Yale and Columbia institutions in the United States contributed to the report.

"These metrics show how near countries are to meeting stated environmental policy targets on a national basis." The EPI presents a scorecard that identifies environmental leaders and laggards, as well as practical guidelines for countries aspiring to move toward a sustainable future," according to the report, which placed Denmark, the United Kingdom, and Finland at the top of the list. "Countries with high scores have made and continue to make long-term investments in policies that safeguard environmental health, maintain biodiversity and habitat, conserve natural resources, and decouple greenhouse gas emissions from economic growth."

According to the report, India scored last among all countries in the 2022 EPI, with low ratings across a number of crucial issues, including "deteriorating air quality and rapidly rising greenhouse gas emissions," which pose serious challenges. The Union Environment Ministry said in a thorough rebuttal that it "does not accept the EPI analysis" and pointed out various criteria that it said were erroneously weighed by the EPI writers.

Thus, the sub-category "Projected Emission Levels in 2050," which has a weight of 36 percent, estimates emissions patterns from 2010 to 2019 and extrapolates them to 2050.
