NEW DELHI: The Railways Ministry today, March 22, made a major announcement that will certainly delight frequent travelers. The ministry has ordered a cut in the price of AC-3 tier economy class tickets, effective from Wednesday, March 22. Yes, with effect from March 22, the railways ministry has issued an order lowering the cost of an economy class ticket for the AC-3 category. Along with this, bedding will be made available as before. The additional cost for the pre-booked tickets will be refunded to customers who purchased tickets in person and online, as per railroad official statement. The cost of a 3-tier economy class ticket has been decreased in accordance with the directive from last year's circular that had made it equivalent to the cost of an AC-3 tier ticket. The Railway Board introduced three-tiered economy coaches to offer the "Best and Cheapest AC Travel" service. These coaches cost 6-7% less than the typical AC 3 tier price. Officially, an AC 3 tier coach has 72 seats, whereas an AC 3 tier economy has 80 seats. In its first year of operation, the AC-3 tier economy class brought in Rs 231 crore for the Railways. Data indicates that between April and August 2022, 15 lakh passengers travelled in these coaches, resulting in revenue of Rs 177 crore.
