Indonesia will upgrade its defence capabilities by purchasing 42 Rafale jets and two Scorpene-class submarines from France. The deal was concluded when Indonesian Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto met with his French colleague Florence Parly here on Thursday, according to media sources.
Eric Trappier, the CEO of French aircraft company Dassault Aviation and Yusuf Jauhari, the head of Indonesia's Defence Ministry's Defence Infrastructure Agency, signed the warplane purchase deal. "First, we negotiated an agreement to buy six warplanes. The remaining 36 will be bought in the not-too-distant future. "We'll also help each other with weaponry training," Subianto said after the bilateral meeting in a virtual press conference.
Meanwhile, Indonesia's state-owned shipbuilder PT PAL and France's NAVAL Group have agreed to buy two Scorpene-class submarines. As part of its attempts to modernise its defence capability, Indonesia is now strengthening its military infrastructure, including the principal weapon system and security equipment.
