Bangladesh: Durga Puja celebrations commenced in Bangladesh with the holding of Maha Shashti puja in mandaps across the country. The celebration started with the face of Durga idol being unveiled on Kalparamba in the temples. Meanwhile, the vibrant pageant of Durga Puja led to violence and vandalism for the Hindu minority group of Bangladesh as Islamic extremists exhibited barbaric behaviour over a Facebook hearsay. A Facebook publish allegedly exhibiting Hindus insulting the Quran went viral on social media on Wednesday night time after which the spiritual fanatics took to the streets to vandalize a number of Durga pandals. Denying the claims of insulting Quran, Shibu Prasad Dutta, the general secretary of Cumilla Mahanagar Puja Udjapon Committee, said that someone placed a copy of the Quran at a Durga Puja pavilion in Nanua Dighir Par early in the morning when the guard was asleep. “The miscreant took some images of this and ran away. Within a few hours, using Facebook, the propaganda spread fast with the provocative pictures,” confirmed a district official. He hinted at the role of some Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and Jamaat-e-Islam workers. As many as three Hindus have reportedly been killed in the violent clash, however, the police is yet to confirm the same. Durga Puja is the biggest festival of Hindus in Bangladesh. As per the Bangladesh Puja Udjapan Parishad this year 32,118 mandaps will organise Durga Puja across the country which is nearly 2000 more than the last year. Capital city Dhaka itself has 238 puja mandaps this year. However, due to the Covid pandemic, the level of celebration will remain restricted as no cultural programmes like dance competitions, processions, and outdoor activities have been permitted during the puja.
