Joe Biden's job approval rating remains in the low 40s: New Poll

WASHINGTON: According to a new poll, 41.3 percent of US citizens approve of Joe Biden's job performance as President during his fifth quarter in office.

As per the Xinhua report, the latest Gallup poll issued on Friday found that the number remained basically stable from 41.7 percent in his fourth quarter, but was much lower than his first three quarterly averages. During his first two years in office, Biden received widespread popularity.

In eight Gallup polls done since September 2021, his job approval ratings have fluctuated between 40% and 43%. According to Gallup, last year's rise in new Covid-19 cases, the tumultuous US exit from Afghanistan, and quickly rising gas prices and inflation have all contributed to a drop in the veteran Democrat's public approval.

Biden's fifth-quarter average is lower than that of any previous elected President, with the exception of his immediate predecessor, Donald Trump. During Trump's fifth quarter, he averaged 39.1% approval. As per Gallup, Biden's low job approval rating poses a serious threat to the Democratic Party's small majority in the House of Representatives and Senate.

Presidents whose parties are unpopular typically lose seats in midterm elections, with the number of seats lost typically being substantially larger for Presidents with job approval ratings below 50%. "Given the strong link between presidential job approval ratings and how the president's party performs in midterm elections," the Gallup analysis continued, "Biden appears likely to govern with Republican majorities in one or both houses of Congress next year unless his rating dramatically improves."
