Johnny Depp, Amber Heard settle defamation suits

FALLS CHURCH: Actors Johnny Depp and Amber Heard have settled their defamation lawsuits after a high-profile trial earlier this year in which the Ex-couple accused each other of physical and verbal battle.

Heard made the settlement public on social media on Monday. In June, both sides had appealed a number of the jury's findings. Depp received $10 million in damages from the seven-member civil jury, but Heard also received $2 million.

According to Depp's team, the agreement calls for her to pay him $1 million to resolve any financial claims. Depp will donate that money to charity, said his attorneys.

We are happy to officially put an end to this upsetting chapter for Mr. Depp, who made it plain throughout the process that his top concern was exposing the truth. Benjamin Chew and Camille Vazquez, Depp's attorneys, stated the verdict in favour of Mr. Depp against Ms. Heard was reached by the jury in a unanimous vote.

In Fairfax County Circuit Court, both sides claimed that the other had slandered them in front of a jury. Depp claimed that Heard had slandered him in a 2018 op-ed for The Washington Post in which she referred to herself as "a public figure representing domestic abuse."

Depp's attorneys claimed that even though the piece did not contain his name, it was defamatory since it made explicit reference to the abuse claims Heard had made against Depp during the divorce process.

Heard, on the other side, claimed that Depp had defamed her when one of his attorneys dismissed her allegations of abuse as a "hoax."

Heard said in a post on Instagram on Monday that choosing to settle was challenging.

She wrote, "I never chose this. "In defending my truth, I ruined my life as I had known it. When women come forward, they are often re-victimized in ways that are compounded by the vilification I have experienced on social media."
