Jos Buttler to Miss England’s T20Is Against Australia, Phil Salt Steps In as Captain

London: Jos Buttler, England's captain, has been ruled out of the upcoming T20I series against Australia due to a setback in his recovery from a right calf injury. This development also puts his participation in the upcoming ODI series against Australia later this month in doubt, according to the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB).

In Buttler’s absence, Phil Salt will lead the team for the T20I series, and all-rounder Jamie Overton has been called up to join the squad. Salt previously captained the Manchester Originals in The Hundred after Buttler was sidelined due to the same calf injury during preparation for the tournament.

Jordan Cox, who is currently with the Test squad for their match against Sri Lanka at The Oval, has been added to the ODI squad as cover. The three-match T20I series between England and Australia is scheduled to start next week at Rose Bowl, Southampton, on September 11.

Following the T20Is, a five-match ODI series will kick off on September 19 at Trent Bridge. This series marks the beginning of a new chapter for England after they were unable to defend their ODI and T20 World Cup titles.

With Matthew Mott recently relieved of his coaching duties, Marcus Trescothick will serve as the interim coach for the series against Australia. Brendon McCullum is set to take over the coaching responsibilities at the start of 2025.

England T20I Squad: Phil Salt (captain), Jofra Archer, Jacob Bethell, Brydon Carse, Jordan Cox, Sam Curran, Josh Hull, Will Jacks, Liam Livingstone, Saqib Mahmood, Dan Mousley, Adil Rashid, Jamie Overton, Reece Topley, John Turner
