Kerala graft case: CSI Bishop appears before ED today

KOCHI: CSI Bishop (Church of South India) A Dharmaraj Rasalam appeared before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in Kochi, Kerala on Wednesday in connection with the probe over corruption allegations at the church's Karakonam medical college.

Bishop reached the Enforcement Directorate office in Kochi at 11 AM pursuant to the notice served to him on July 26 to appear before it. The Bishop was stopped on Tuesday from traveling to England to take part in the Lambeth meeting.

The Enforcement Directorate had on Monday conducted raids at institutions linked to the church over a case related to Karakonam medical college. Fr. CR Godwin, the Director of the Christian Education Board, had earlier said that the Crime Branch had already conducted an inquiry in the matter. The raid was in connection with a case registered for allegedly collecting huge amounts of money from students, promising them a medical seat at the Dr. Somervell Memorial CSI Medical College in Karakonam.

According to a church official, the Bishop "was meant to attend the Lambeth Conference, which is organised by the Archbishop of Canterbury." It is a meeting of bishops from all throughout the Anglican Communion. " " He was, however, halted at the airport without warning. "Despite the fact that the ED conducted an inspection yesterday, they did not warn the Bishop that he could not leave the country to attend the conference," the official said.
