New Delhi: In a significant development, the Lok Sabha approved two crucial bills - the National Nursing and Midwifery Commission Bill, 2023, and the National Dental Commission Bill, 2023, amidst a heated uproar from the Opposition. The primary objective of the National Nursing and Midwifery Commission Bill is to establish the National Nursing and Midwifery Commission (NNMC) while repealing the outdated Indian Nursing Council Act of 1947. This legislative move aims to streamline nursing education across India. With a substantial number of 33.41 lakh registered nursing personnel in the country, the Bill places a strong emphasis on regulating and maintaining the highest standards of education and services provided by nursing and midwifery professionals. It also encompasses the assessment of institutions, the creation of National and State Registers, and the development of a system to enhance access, research, and the adoption of the latest scientific advancements in the nursing and midwifery profession. The government contends that the Indian Nursing Council Act of 1947 was originally designed to establish a uniform standard of training for nurses, midwives, and health visitors. However, over time, it underwent minimal amendments, leading to limited growth opportunities for the professionals in question. Meanwhile, the National Dental Commission Bill, 2023, aims to regulate the dentistry profession, ensuring the delivery of quality and affordable dental education. Its overarching goal is to make high-quality oral healthcare accessible to all citizens, bringing it on par with global standards. According to government data, there are currently 2.89 lakh registered dentists in the country. In conclusion, these landmark bills represent significant strides towards improving and modernizing the healthcare professions of nursing, midwifery, and dentistry in India. They seek to address the challenges faced by these sectors and create a pathway for a brighter and more efficient future.
