'Appointment of Lokayukta to be done soon', says Delhi govt in High Court

New Delhi: The Arvind Kejriwal government in Delhi on Thursday told the High Court that the process of appointing the Lokayukta is on as promised by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in its 2020 election manifesto. The Delhi government said that the names have been recommended for appointment to the post of Lokayukta.

Chief Justice D.N. This information was given by the government in response to a PIL before a bench of Patel and Justice Jyoti Singh. The petition has sought an order from the government to appoint the Lokayukta within a month. The post of Lokayukta has been lying vacant in the capital since December 2020. Standing counsel Santosh Tripathi told the bench that a meeting for appointment of the post of Lokayukta was held on February 10 and a name has since been recommended. He said the process of appointment is underway and will be completed soon. Following the government's statement, the court adjourned the matter to April 29.

The petition said the AAP, which came out of the historic anti-corruption movement, is not serious about the appointment of the Lokayukta. The plea also alleged that the Delhi government is not taking steps to eliminate the menace of bribery, black money, unknown property, tax evasion, profiteering and other economic as well as white-collar crimes.
