Mahela Jayawardene expects fascinating series between India, Australia

New Delhi: Ex-Captain of Sri Lanka, Mahela Jayawardene, is expecting a fascinating series between India and Australia and forecast that the Baggy Greens can break the deadlock during the battle for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

On the ICC Men's Test Rankings, Australia and India are presently holding the top two positions. The two passionate rivals are also in a great position to go to the final as they currently lead the ICC World Test Championship standings. Since 2004, the Australian team has failed to win on Indian soil; nevertheless, Jayawardene is optimistic that Pat Cummins' team would succeed this time.

"I believe the series will always be fantastic. I believe that the Indian conditions, how the Australian batsmen approach them, and how the Indian batsmen approach them are all important factors. It depends on how each side performs in the first game of the series and who is gaining momentum. In the most recent episode of The ICC Review, Jayawardene observed, "But it will be fascinating. Although it's hard to forecast, as a Sri Lankan, I'm rooting for Australia to win. It will be difficult, but I think Australia will win 2-1," he said.

India has benefited greatly from Shubhman Gill's outstanding performance in white-ball cricket in the shorter formats, and Jayawardene thought the young batsman may have an even greater influence in the red-ball game.

He has been quite effective, is technically sound, and plays with good pace, the man remarked. It will always be difficult, but it will be a really good series. That'll maintain him in good stead against that Australian attack.

He is currently in excellent form, and if he can translate that into red-ball cricket while maintaining that tempo, maturity, and awareness of the scenarios and surroundings, he will be a valuable addition to India's starting lineup. He does provide them with those strong beginnings at a good speed to put the pressure on the other bowling attacks, the Sri Lankan said.

The first Test of Australia's four-match tour of India is scheduled to take place at Nagpur on February 9.
