Major General Ranjit Singh is the newly appointed IG of Assam Rifles (EAST)

Major General Ranjit Singh on Wednesday took incharge as the Inspector General of Assam Rifles IGAR (East). Major General GAV Reddy handed over the reins of the IGAR (East) to Major General Singh. Major General Singh is the sixth incumbent at Srikona Garrison in Silchar. Assam Rifles, the ‘force to reckon with’, is a professional, credible and people-friendly force, that shows immense contribution towards ensuring security and improving the lives of people in Tripura, Mizoram, South Assam and West Manipur.

Assam Rifles (East) looks after Tripura, Mizoram, South Assam and West Manipur and plays multifarious roles. Assam Rifles (East), looks after the counter-insurgency operations in West Manipur, and is involved in effective border management in Mizoram and civic action projects in the entire region to win over the hearts and minds of people, said a press statement. “Major General Ranjit Singh has vast operational experience of counter-insurgency operations in most difficult terrains across the country,” the press statement said.

Major General Singh was awarded the prestigious Vishisht Seva Medal for his service as a Brigade Commander. He commanded the 7th Battalion of Madras Regiment in Tinsukia, Binaguri and 56 Mountain Brigade at Dras in Kargil district famous for 1999 Kargil War. He has served in Mokokchung, Tinsukia and Rangiya and has been handpicked by the ministry for this prestigious appointment, the press statement said. The press statement concluded saying, “Assam Rifles under his able leadership and guidance is likely to contribute substantially towards ushering in peace, prosperity and stability in the Northeast region".
