WEST BENGAL: Mamata Banerjee, the chief minister of West Bengal, has received the first Bangla Academy award for her "relentless literary pursuit." The award was established this year, and CM Mamata was the inaugural recipient for her novel "Kabita Bitan."
Mamata Banerjee received the award during the 'Kavi Pranam' event hosted by the West Bengal government's Information and Culture Department to commemorate the great poet Rabindranath Tagore's birth anniversary.
Despite being present at the event and sitting on the stage when the award was handed, Mamata Banerjee did not receive the honour herself, according to sources. On behalf of the CM, state education minister Bratya Basu accepted the honour. Mamata's name was chosen for the award by a jury of some of the state's top writers, according to the minister.
Mamata Banerjee was honoured for her book 'Kabita Bitan,' which was released during the Kolkata Book Fair in 2020. The book includes 946 pieces of poetry written by the chief minister.
People who create literature while working in other industries will be given the medal for "relentless literary endeavour." Some BJP officials have criticised CM Banerjee for receiving prizes for herself. The fact that state education minister Bratya Basu is also the chairperson of the Bangla Academy is noteworthy.
