Mamata Banerjee’s Govt To Submit Proposal In Assembly To Form State Legislative Council

Kolkata: West Bengal CM and Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo Mamata Banerjee is likely to move a proposal to form a Legislative Council in the state in the assembly. CM Mamata had promised to form the Legislative Council during the Bengal assembly elections. The monsoon session of the Assembly has begun in Bengal from July 2.

According to the information received, CM Mamata Banerjee is likely to move a proposal to set up a Legislative Council in the monsoon session of the Assembly. It may be recalled that Bengal has 294 assembly seats and if the Legislative Council is constituted, it can have 98 seats. This is because the number of legislative council seats cannot exceed one-third of the number of assembly seats. Tell me, CM Mamata Banerjee may move a proposal to form a Legislative Council in the Assembly, but even after that, a screw will be stuck. After the resolution is passed in the Assembly, it will have to be passed by a majority from both the Houses of Parliament i.e. Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. Thus, the Assembly Council in Bengal cannot be constituted without the permission of the Modi government at the Centre.

Bengal used to have a Legislative Council 5 decades ago, but later it was abolished. After independence, a 51-member Legislative Council was formed in Bengal on June 5, 1952. It was later abolished on March 21, 1969. In the 2011 elections, Mamata Banerjee promised to form a Legislative Council as soon as West Bengal came to power, but it has not been done so far.
