AGRA: A 45-year-old man has been detained for allegedly duping a Japanese national of Rs 23 lakh in Agra, police said on Tuesday. At the Agra Tourist police station in January of this year, a case was filed under section 420 of the IPC against the defendant, Lapka Ali Hussain. "On Monday, the culprit was busted when defrauding some other tourists close to the Taj Mahal. The 56-year-old citizen of Kyoto, Japan, arrived in India in March 2019, according to the authorities. When she arrived in Agra, she was unable to find her accommodation and stopped to ask Hussain, a local, for help. Hussain offered to give her a tour of the city the next day. Later, he is alleged to have defrauded her of Rs. 23 lakh to purchase jewellery, which he then promised to ship back to Japan after clearing customs. She then went back to Japan, but she never got the jewellery. In January of this year, she returned to India and filed an FIR against the defendant. The woman has been told of Hussain's detention and will likely appear in court relatively soon, the police said.
