KOLKATA: More than 30 persons have been held in relation to the intermittent skirmishes between two communities in Mominpur, in South Kolkata, sources said on Monday.

To stop further flare-ups of fights that began late on Sunday night and continued till this morning, a sizable police presence has been deployed in the tense region.

The police have been alerted by locals that fights between two groups that began as verbal spats turned physical. Also, some homes in Mominpur and the nearby Mayurbhanj Roads were plundered. Police officers, including a deputy commissioner of police, were hurt while attempting to contain the situation. Besides, a number of people organised a demonstration in front of the Ekbalpur police station.

A sizable police presence prevented Sukanta Majumdar, the BJP state president in West Bengal and party MP, from going any closer to the problematic area on Monday. Four of Majumdar's accomplices were also taken into custody.
Suvendu Adhikari, the opposition leader in the West Bengal Assembly, has written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah to urge the deployment of central forces soldiers in the city's volatile areas.

He also criticised Sukanta Majumdar's detention by the municipal police and their denial of his democratic right to travel to the volatile area. "Make every effort you can. However, you will be powerless to stop the BJP" Adhikari said.
