GUWAHATI: In a shocking incident, a 20-year-old student was found hanging in his hostel room at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati, police said on Monday. The student recognised as Gudla Mahesh Sai Raj from the East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh, who was pursuing B.Tech was found hanging from his hostel room on Sunday.

It is reported that Raj had been missing since October 6 and is alleged to have taken the serious step after he was reportedly asked to quit his hostel room in July-August due to academic reasons. Police said that he was found hanging in a vacant room of the Lohit hostel of IIT Guwahati on Sunday.

"Since the evening of October 6 from his room C-314 at the Lohit hostel, Gudla Mahesh Sai Raj was missing. He was discovered hanged on Sunday morning (October 9) in hostel room D-360. After performing a post-mortem, we gave the body to the family members "The head of the Amingaon Police outpost, Tanmoy Nath, said. The body found in one of the dorm buildings has been "recognised as a former student of the institute," according to a statement from IIT Guwahati.

According to the statement, the family has been notified by the institute and has arrived on campus. IIT Guwahati released a statement saying, "We will assist with the police investigation and will also commission an internal probe on this matter.

Another student from Kerala also committed suicide inside the IIT Guwahati dorm on September 16 and was found dead in his room. Further details are awaited.
