Manipur: Now 7-storey buildings will be built in this state, the administration gave permission

Imphal: The Manipur government has allowed the construction of buildings up to seven floors in the border of Imphal Municipal Corporation (IMC). Earlier, only three-storey buildings were allowed to be built here. Speaking to the media, Minister of Urban Administration, Housing and Urban Development Department Thunojam Shyamkumar Singh has said that the decision has been taken after due consultation with experts and architects.

He further said that this decision was necessary to relieve the pressure on agricultural land on the outskirts of the city. Sivakumar said, 'After obtaining the permit, now seven-storey buildings can be constructed within the IMC boundary.' IMC Imphal is spread over an area of 34.48 sq km in East and West districts. Shyamkumar further said that the builders were requested to follow all safety procedures and laws during construction as Manipur falls under the seismic zone.

About 32 earthquakes have been recorded in the state within the last one year. In 2016, a 6.7 magnitude earthquake struck Manipur, killing six people and damaging several buildings. Officials have said that these seven-storey buildings will have to be made earthquake resistant. At the same time, the design of the buildings already built will have to change themselves to conform to the established norms about construction in the seismic zone.
