Market Closing: Sensex settles 497 pts highr, Nifty at 16,771

On Tuesday, the Sensex and Nifty50 indexes in India closed higher, tracking gains in other Asian markets. At the close, the Sensex gained 497 points, or 0.89 percent, to 56,319.01, while the Nifty had risen 156.60 points, or 0.94 percent, to 16,770.80. Nearly 2205 shares have advanced, 1032 shares have declined, and 111 shares have remained unchanged.

Among the top Nifty gainers were HCL Technologies, Wipro, UPL, Adani Ports, and Tata Steel. Power Grid Corporation, Axis Bank, Bajaj Finance, Cipla, and SBI are the losers. HCL Technologies and Wipro were the top gainers among the Sensex 30 index, rising 4% and 3.6%, respectively.

Shares in Real estate, capital goods, pharma, energy, information technology, and metals all finished in the green, with gains ranging from 1 to 3 percent. The BSE midcap and smallcap indices both gained more than 1%. The BSE Midcap and Smallcap indices finished with gains of 1.4  and 1.3 percent, respectively, in the broader market. The overall breadth on the BSE was also fairly positive, with more than two advancing shares for every declining stock.

Global equities rose as investors assessed the extent to which the Omicron coronavirus variant would affect economies around the world, while the US dollar fell as investors' appetite for riskier assets returned cautiously.
