Migrant workers did not get free grains for month of May-June, Know reason

New Delhi: During the lockdown, there was not only an employment crisis in front of the migrant workers but in front of them, returning to the hometown, providing food for the family was an even bigger crisis. The Central Government had announced relief for about 8 crore migrant laborers and needy families under the self-sufficient India package.

According to the announcement, all migrant laborers (even those without ration cards) were asked to provide free food grains for the month of May-June. The central government decided that 5 kg of rice/wheat and 1 kg of gram per person would be given free for all migrant workers who returned home. For this, the central government allocated 8 lakh metric tonnes of food grains to all states. However, the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food, and Public Distribution has stated in its data that in the last two months only 13% of the grain received by the state government to migrant laborers has been consumed.

The ministry has said in its data that under the Self-Reliant India package, 8 crore migrant workers without ration cards were asked to give 5 kg of food grains in May and June. But till now only 2.13 crore laborers have got the benefit. 1.21 crore people in May and 92.44 lakh people in June have taken advantage of this scheme.
