Minor girl sold as child bride rescued from Jaipur

JAIPUR:  A Fourteen-year old girl, sold as a child bride to a forty-year-old man, was rescued from this city on Thursday. The girl,  as per reports, who hails from a remote village in Dholpur district, has been sent to the Jaipur government shelter home after a medical examination.

In December last year, the minor girl has allegedly married off for Rs 3 lakh by her mother's live-in partner to a man who was 40 years old. Her husband is a resident of another village in the same district.

The incident happened while she was visiting her mother, who had recently moved in with the man. Her mother's lover repeatedly punched her there and labelled her a "liability." He later married her after selling her to a 40-year-old man. Her spouse often assaulted her verbally and sexually after they got married. She was forced to perform all home tasks and, if she objected, the man would repeatedly rape her and torture her.

She was also verbally and physically tormented by her husband and in-laws for not becoming pregnant. She had made many fruitless attempts to flee the house because she couldn't take the torture, but this week she was finally successful.

She arrived Jaipur after escaping from her in-laws' home. When volunteers from the Bachpan Bachao Andolan (BBA) learned that a young woman was lost and wandering around the Jawahar Circle area, they acted quickly to save her. When they arrived at Jawahar Nagar police station, they took the girl there and filed an FIR.

A zero FIR has been filed by the police under Sections 5 and 6 of the POCSO and 376 of the IPC. Due to the fact that the young girl was sold and transported to a distant area, they are also considering the possibility of bringing up the pertinent portions of trafficking statutes.

Director of Bachpan Bachao Andolan Manish Sharma stated: "This incidence brings attention to the suffering that child marriage victims endure in their early years of life. It is high time that child marriage is looked at as a big crime rather than an acceptable societal norm".
