Tension erupted in the border areas after violent clashes occurred between residents of the Mizoram and Assam. Tension erupted on Saturday after some residents of Vairengte in Kolasib district of Mizoram set on fire temporary huts made by residents of Lailapur in Assam’s Cachar district on a stretch of the disputed land. While central government and both the state government are making efforts to curb down the tension, Mizoram chief minister Zoramthanga on Thursday expressed his displeasure over reports of withdrawing forces from the border and claimed the widely circulated report as ‘misinformation’. According to the report issued earlier by the Assam government, Mizoram had consented to pull out its forces from the territory, following the intervention of Joint Secretary, Ministry of Home Affairs (in-charge of North East) Satyendra Kumar Garg on Wednesday. However, refuting the report, Zoramthanga retweeted DIPR official handle. He wrote, “misinformation…something we needed the least at this time.” In a telephonic conversation, Union home minister Amit Shah on Wednesday had separate telephonic conversations with the chief ministers of Assam and Mizoram to resolve the ongoing border dispute. The Centre stepped up as ground-level talks between the two states failed on Tuesday. After the incident, residents on the Assam side have blocked the highway going to Mizoram affecting the transportation system.
