Modi govt announces relief to victims of 1984 anti-Sikh riots

New Delhi: The Modi government at the Centre has announced a rehabilitation package for the victims of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. The package, announced by the Ministry of Minority Affairs on Thursday (August 05, 2021), announced financial assistance of Rs 3.50 lakh for the dependents of the deceased and Rs 1.25 lakh for the injured.

The Ministry of Minorities informed in the lower house of the Parliament that in this scheme a provision has also been made to give a monthly pension of Rs 2,500 to the widows and elderly relatives of the deceased by the State Governments. It was informed by the Ministry that the expenditure on pension would be borne by the State Government. It was informed by the ministry in the Lok Sabha that the scheme to provide relief to those killed in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots was launched by the central government in 2014. A provision of Rs 4.5 crore was also made for this in the Union Budget of 2021-22. The ministry said that the increased relief amount will be paid by the states and union territories from their own funds, however, later the funds will be released to them by the home ministry on the basis of utilization receipts.

Let us inform that after the assassination of the then PM Indira Gandhi in 1984, anti-Sikh riots broke out in many other places of the country including the national capital Delhi. In this massacre that lasted for several days, about 3,000 people were killed in Delhi itself. Apart from this, about 50,000 Sikhs were made homeless. It was only after this brutal massacre against Sikhs that PM Rajiv Gandhi had said, 'When a big tree falls, the ground shakes a little.'
