NHRC holds public hearing on human rights breaches in 5 Northeastern states

Imphal: In December, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) will convene a public hearing to hear people's complaints about alleged human rights violations in five northeastern states: Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura, Manipur, and Sikkim.

Officials in Imphal said on Friday that the Commission will convene a two-day public hearing on December 15 and 16, and that the Registrar has invited citizens to file their complaints by November 20.  The location of the public hearing will be announced shortly. The NHRC has lately requested Action Taken Reports from Assam's Director General of Police on suspected "false encounters" in the state since May this year, based on a complaint filed by Delhi-based lawyer Arif Jwadder.

Since early May, when police opened fire on them as the "accused reportedly tried to escape from detention or during operations," more than 24 people have been murdered and approximately 40 others have been injured.

Lawyer Jwadder had already filed a complaint with the National Human Rights Commission, stating that "police have killed several accused persons in the name of encounters" since May.
