Chennai: On August 10, the National Investigation Agency’s (NIA) Absconder Tracking Team in Bengaluru arrested Seeni Aabulkhan, a major suspect in a Sri Lankan human trafficking case linked to the LTTE terror organization. The arrest took place in Ramanathapuram, Tamil Nadu, after Aabulkhan had been on the run for three years. According to a social media update from the NIA, Aabulkhan and his associates were involved in confirming trafficked victims aboard a boat in the high seas before transporting them to Mangaluru by train, car, and bikes for further confinement.
The case originally began with Mangaluru city police, who rescued 13 Sri Lankan nationals from traffickers in June 2021. The NIA later took over the investigation, re-registering the case under RC 17/2-21/NIA/DLI. The NIA’s investigation revealed that Easan, a Sri Lankan with previous links to the now-banned LTTE, was the mastermind behind the trafficking ring. Easan collaborated with the accused to bring 38 Sri Lankan nationals to Tamil Nadu, luring them with false promises of migration to Canada and job opportunities.
Since the probe began, the NIA has charged ten accused, including three absconders, between October 2021 and January 2024. A preliminary charge sheet was filed against five Indian suspects—Dhinakaran alias Ayya, Kasi Viswanathan, Rasool, Satham Ushen, and Abdul Muheetu—in October 2021. To date, 13 suspects have been charged, with seven already arrested. The investigation remains ongoing to apprehend the remaining absconders.
In a related case, the NIA apprehended Mohamed Imran Khan alias Haja Najerbheeden in October of the previous year. Khan had been on the run since June 2021 and was identified as a key player in a broader international human trafficking conspiracy. The NIA’s Absconder Tracking Team monitored his movements, leading to his capture in Theni District, Tamil Nadu. Additionally, in July, the NIA arrested four individuals in Delhi who were suspected of luring young Indians with promises of lucrative jobs abroad, highlighting the agency's ongoing efforts to combat human trafficking.
