One of the highest civilian Awards of the country, Padma Awards has been announced on Monday. Conferred in three categories, Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri, the awards are conferred during Republic day eve. This year, 2021, Indian President Ram Nath Kovind has approved conferment of 119 Padma Awards including one duo case (in a duo case, the Award is counted as one). The list comprises of 7 Padma Vibhushan, 10 Padma Bhushan and 102 Padma Shri Awards. Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on Friday announced the Padma Awards 2021 on the eve of 72nd Republic Day. This year list includes 29 of the awardees are women while 10 are from the category of Foreigners/NRI/PIO/OCI, 16 posthumous awardees and one transgender awardee. Seven Padma Vibhushan awardees includes Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, late singer S P Balasubrahmanyam, eminent cardiologist from Karnataka Belle Monappa Hegde, archaeologist B B Lal and father of fibre optics late Narinder Singh Kapany. This year Padma Bhushan list was dominated by politicians, including former Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan and former Gujarat Chief Minister late Keshubhai Patel. Former Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and former Union Minister Ramvilas Paswan are also the recipients of Padma Bhushan.
