PM Modi congratulates new S.Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Yoon Suk Yeol on his election as President of South Korea on Tuesday, and stated his wish to expand ties between the two countries. On Tuesday, South Korea's new president, Yoon Suk Yeol, was sworn in as the leader of the country's first conservative government in five years.

PM Modi took to Twitter to say, "As ROK President @sukyeol-yoon begins his term in office today, I send him my warmest greetings and best wishes. I want to meet him soon and collaborate with him to deepen and enrich India-ROK relations."

Relations between India and the Republic of Korea (RoK) have progressed significantly in recent years, becoming fully multidimensional as a result of a considerable convergence of interests, mutual goodwill, and high-level encounters. On the invitation of then-South Korean President Moon Jae-in, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid a state visit to South Korea on February 21-22, 2019, during which both sides held extensive discussions on defence, economic, cultural, and scientific cooperation.

Both leaders presented a Mahatma Gandhi bust at Seoul's elite Yonsei University. PM Modi also accepted the Seoul Peace Prize and gave a Bodhi seedling to Gimhae City.

Six Memorandums of Understanding were signed on start-ups, cooperative postal stamp-issuing, trans-border and international crime, trade facilitation, highways, and media.
