PM Modi greets people on Lachit Diwas

NEW DELHI: On Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi sent his best wishes on the occasion of Lachit Diwas, a holiday celebrated in Assam each year to commemorate the birth anniversary of Lachit Borphukan, a legendary Ahom general who delivered the Mughals their most humiliating defeat.

The Prime Minister tweeted in Assamese: "On this day of Lachit, greetings. We commemorate the famous Lachit Borphukan's 400th birthday on this unique Lachit Diwas. He personified unmatched bravery. He was a visionary leader who prioritised the welfare of his followers above everything else." The Ahom general was born 400 years ago on Thursday.

The Prime Minister will launch celebrations in the nation's capital to celebrate the occasion.

Know More About Lachit Borphukan: Lachit Borphukan was originally named Lachit Deca.  Born to Momai Tamuli, Lachit Borphukan later rose to become the first Governor of Upper Assam and Commander-in-Chief of the Ahom army (Borbarua). He was given a well-rounded education that comprised the arts, military science, and spiritual scriptures thanks to Momai Tamuli.

On the banks of the Brahmaputra, the Battle of Saraighat, for which Borphukan is renowned, took place. The Mughal army consisted of 5,000 soldiers, 15,000 archers, 18,000 Turkish cavalry, and around 1,000 guns. He led the Ahom army to a resounding victory by using guerilla warfare tactics against the troops and clever use of the terrain. After holding prominent positions like Ghora Barua (Superintendent of the Royal Horses), Dolaksharia Barua (Superintendent of the Royal Household Guards), and Commander of the Strategic Simulgarh Fort, Lachit Borphukan advanced the ranks to become the army's top commander.

He was also given the opportunity to serve as the Ahom King's private secretary, commonly known as the scarf bearer (Soladhara Barua). He was eventually given the position of commander of the Ahom army by King Chakradhwaj.
