Sindhutai Sapkal, a social activist and Padma Shri awardee, known as Kahi, the mother of orphaned children, has passed away. She bid farewell to the world on Tuesday at the age of 73. Sindhu Sapkal was always called Sindhutai or Mother. She devoted her entire life to the lives of orphans. More than 1400 orphans have also been brought up. She has been awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India for her outstanding social service. Sindhutai Sapkal was affectionately called the 'mother of orphans'. Sindhutai was suffering from septicaemia and was being treated at Galaxy Hospital in Pune for the past one and a half months. She has also been awarded the Padma Shri last year. She breathed her last at 8.30 pm on Tuesday. The last rites are scheduled to be performed in Pune today with full state honours.
