New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is poised to inaugurate the operations control center of the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor on Tuesday. This move aims to alleviate congestion in the railway network, with portions of the infrastructure project also slated for inauguration. Additionally, PM Modi will unveil the 401-kilometer new Khurja Junction-Sanehwal section of the Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor (EDFC) and the 224-kilometer new Makarpura Junction-Gholvad section of the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC). The EDFC section traversing 12 districts in Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Punjab promises enhanced connectivity across major agricultural and industrial regions in North India, as per a statement from the Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation (DFCC). Meanwhile, the 244-kilometer WDFC section will link five districts of Gujarat, including Vadodara, Bharuch, Surat, Navsari, and Valsad. The state-of-the-art operations control center (OCC) situated in Ahmedabad will act as the nerve center for the 1,506-kilometer corridor. Equipped with an integrated train management system, dedicated freight information system, and supervisor control and data acquisition system, the OCC ensures real-time monitoring, control, and efficient planning of freight train operations across the WDFC stations and Indian Railways. Notably, the EDFC has slashed the transit time for coal transportation from eastern India to regional power plants from 35 hours to less than 20 hours, thanks to freight trains operating at a maximum speed of 100 kmph. Similarly, the WDFC has accelerated the transportation of perishable goods such as milk, vegetables, fruits, and farm products. According to the DFCC statement, the EDFC stands at 100 percent completion, witnessing over 150 trains operating daily at an average speed of 50-60 kmph. Meanwhile, the WDFC is 81 percent complete, with more than 100 trains running daily at an average speed of 50-55 kmph.
