PM Narendra Modi Honored 'Captain' Vijayakant in Tribute

CHENNAI: Recently, the nation bid farewell to a highly esteemed and revered figure, Thiru Vijayakant Ji. He was affectionately known as Captain and stood as a beacon of guidance for everyone. His life was dedicated to uplifting others, offering leadership, and extending a helping hand to those in need. Personally, Captain was not just an acquaintance but a close friend with whom I had numerous interactions and collaborations.

Captain was a versatile personality who made significant contributions in various domains.

In the realm of Indian cinema, Vijayakant Ji left an enduring legacy that few stars can match. His early life and cinematic journey serve as an inspiration. His ascent from modest beginnings to the pinnacle of Tamil cinema isn't merely a tale of stardom but a testament to relentless hard work and unwavering commitment. His foray into films wasn't for fame alone; it was fueled by passion and perseverance. Each of his movies not only entertained audiences but also echoed the societal values of its time, resonating deeply with a diverse audience.

The roles portrayed by Captain in his films often underscored his profound understanding of the struggles faced by ordinary citizens. He frequently depicted characters that battled against injustice, corruption, violence, extremism, terrorism, and advocated for the marginalized—an embodiment of these qualities in his own life. His films served as reflective mirrors showcasing society's virtues and vices, blending entertainment with poignant social messages.

I want to emphasize his deep affinity for rural life and culture. Despite achieving immense fame and traveling extensively, his love for village life and traditional values remained unwavering. His films seemed to mirror his experiences in rural settings, and he made commendable efforts to bridge the gap in understanding between urban and rural dwellers.

However, Captain's impact extended beyond the silver screen when he ventured into politics with a desire to serve society on a larger scale. His entry into politics demanded courage and sacrifice, especially in the midst of dominant political figures like Amma Jayalalithaa Ji and Kalaignar Karunanidhi Ji in Tamil Nadu. Introducing a third alternative was unique but characteristic of Captain's independent approach. His emphasis on nationalism and social justice mirrored in the ideology of the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK), which he founded in 2005. In a highly competitive political landscape, he swiftly became the principal Opposition leader in 2011, a testament to his swift rise since the party's formation.

I had the opportunity to collaborate with Captain during the 2014 Lok Sabha elections when our parties formed an alliance and secured over 18.5% of the votes—the highest for any national alliance without the main regional players since the 1989 elections. I fondly recall a joint rally in Salem, witnessing his impassioned speeches and his ability to connect with the masses. His jubilation was evident when the NDA formed the government in 2014; I vividly remember his happiness during the post-poll victory meeting in the Central Hall.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Vijayakant Ji's life imparts valuable lessons to the youth, showcasing the power of resilience, an unyielding spirit, and the ability to overcome challenges through unwavering dedication. Equally inspiring was his philanthropic nature, using his fame and resources to give back to society in numerous ways.

He ardently wished for Tamil Nadu and India to emerge as leaders in healthcare and education.

Vijayakant Ji's passing has left a void for many—an admired star to some, a beloved leader to others. For me, it's the loss of a cherished friend whose warmth and wisdom were exceptional. His departure leaves an irreplaceable gap. The Kural speaks of courage, generosity, wisdom, and zeal as essential traits of a successful leader, all of which Captain embodied, earning him widespread respect.

His legacy will endure in the hearts of his fans, the history of Tamil cinema, and the realm of public service. We will persist in realizing his vision for progress and social justice for all.
