PM-CARES trustees to work with enhanced vision: PM Modi

New Delhi: On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave the board of trustees of the PM CARES fund instructions to operate with a broader perspective during trying times and to successfully handle emergencies by taking precautions against them and strengthening capability.

The PM CARES trustees further decided to name eminent persons for the appointment to the PM CARES Fund's advisory board. They include Anand Shah, co-founder of Teach for India, Rajiv Mehrishi, a former CEO of Indicorps and Piramal Foundation, and Sudha Murthy, the former chairperson of the Infosys Foundation.  They also briefed the Prime Minsiter about differnet initiatives undertaken with the help of these funds.

According to reports, a PM CARES for Children programme was started with the aid of these monies and now supports as many as 4,345 kids.

The participation of new trustees and advisors would assist provide a wider perspective on the functioning of PM CARES, and their expertise can bring in improved responsiveness to the demands of the public, PM Modi said during the meeting. While the Prime Minister praised the contributions made by citizens to the PM CARES Fund, the trustees praised the role performed by the fund at pivotal moments for the nation. 

A public charitable trust with the name Prime Minister's Citizen Assistance and Relief in Emergency Situations Fund (PM CARES Fund) was established with the intention of dealing with any kind of emergency or distress situation, like the COVID-19 pandemic, and to provide relief to the affected. PM CARES Fund has been registered as a public charitable trust.

The trust deed for the PM CARES Fund was filed on March 27, 2020 in New Delhi in accordance with the Registration Act, 1908. The Ministers of Defence, Home Affairs, and Finance of the Government of India are ex-officio Trustees of the PM CARES Fund, and PM Modi serves as its ex-officio Chairman.

Amit Shah, the Union Home Minister, and Nirmala Sitharaman, the Union Finance Minister, both trustees, attended the meeting along with the newly nominated trustees. Former Supreme Court Justice K.T. Thomas, former Deputy Speaker Karia Munda, and Ratan Tata were among the new trustees appoointed.
