Probe ordered after fisherman died in Kerala

KOCHI: The Kerala government has launched an investigation into a 57-year-old fisherman's suicide, which he blamed on "apathy" on the part of authorities at the Fort Kochi revenue office.

Kerala Revenue Minister K.Rajan told the media on Friday that a joint investigation by the Land Revenue Joint Commissioner had been ordered.

"He has been given a week to submit his report, and if any form of carelessness on the part of any employee at the Revenue Divisional Office is discovered, harsh action would be taken," Rajan added.

For the past year, Sajeevan, a fisherman for the previous 30 years, had been visiting the Fort Kochi office to correct his income paperwork. He came into the workplace the last time on Wednesday.

Sajeevan was found hanging from a tree at his home on Thursday morning. Later, a suicide note was discovered in which he accused government corruption, claiming that despite addressing the revenue department multiple times with a legitimate need, his objections were ignored.
