Amritsar: Punjab CM and veteran Congress leader Amarinder Singh on Saturday wrote a letter to PM Narendra Modi demanding that the existing system of payment be maintained to farmers for purchase of products till the issue of Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) is agreed upon. Let us say that in Punjab, the farmers are now paid through commission agents. Union Food Minister Piyush Goyal, while writing a letter to the state Government on March 27, had asked the farmers to pay directly. Amarinder said that talks should be held with all parties before any reforms including direct payment to farmers. According to an official statement, he said that a sudden change in the present system may hamper the procurement process. This may not only affect the food security of the country but also pose a threat to the livelihood of millions of farmers, laborers, and even businessmen. M. Amarinder said that there are no middlemen between the farmers and the procurement agencies and they are service providers. He urged PM Modi to ensure that the livelihood of farmers and others involved in the smooth procurement of foodgrains not be affected.
