Rahul Gandhi accepts Indira Gandhi's emergency orders as mistake for first time

New Delhi: Former Congress National President and MP from Wayanad Lok Sabha seat, Rahul Gandhi said on Tuesday that the Emergency imposed by former PM Indira Gandhi was a "mistake". Rahul Gandhi said that whatever happened during that time was "wrong". However, it was completely different from the current perspective, because Congress never tried to capture the institutional structure of the country and what is happening today is worse than that.

Rahul Gandhi said this in an online discussion with Kaushik Basu, a professor at Cornell University in the US and former Chief Economic Advisor of India. Rahul Gandhi said that he is in favor of internal democracy in Congress. He said that the Congress fought for the independence of the country, gave the country its constitution, and stood up for equality. In response to a question about the Emergency, Rahul said, "I think it was a mistake. Sure, that was a mistake. And my grandmother (Indira Gandhi) said the same. "

At the end of the Emergency, Indira Gandhi announced the election. In this regard, former President of the country Pranab Mukherjee told Basu that he did this because he was afraid of losing. On the question asked about this, Rahul Gandhi said that whatever happened in Emergency was "wrong" and there is a fundamental difference between him and today's situation.
