Rajiv Kumar invited as Int'l Observer in Nepal polls

NEW DELHI: Rajiv Kumar, the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC), has been invited to serve as an international observer for the upcoming elections in Nepal on November 20.

Elections to fill 550 seats in the seven Provincial Assemblies and elect 275 members of the Federal Parliament are scheduled for the federal and provincial levels of Nepal.

From November 18 to November 22, Rajiv Kumar will be in charge of a group of ECI representatives visiting the neighbouring country as state guests. Kumar would be visiting polling places in Kathmandu and the surrounding areas during his visit.

The Election Commission of India (ECI)  also runs a programme called the International Election Visitors Program where members of other election management organisations are invited to observe the general and Assembly elections that are held on a regular basis.

They said that the ECI has consistently led the way in advancing the cause of democracy globally through bilateral and multilateral engagement with other Election Management Bodies (EMBs) and other international organisations. More than 2200 officers from 109 countries, including 70 officers from Nepal, have been educated by ECI's India International Institute of Democracy and Election Management (IIIDEM) as part of capacity building programmes. Also, the IIIDEM will host a capacity-building session for 25 representatives of the Nepali Election Commission from March 13 and March 24, 2023.

Representatives from the Election Commission of Nepal took part in the international conference on the "Role, Framework, and Capacity of EMBs" that was recently conducted in the nation's capital and was hosted by the ECI. As part of Cohort activities under "Summit for Democracy - Year of Action," the ECI will hold two more international conferences on the themes of "Inclusive and Accessible elections" and "Technology in elections."
