Relief for Karnataka CM BS Yediyurappa as SC puts on stay the land denotification case

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday provided a relief to Karnataka Chief Minister and senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader BS Yediyurappa as it put on stay a 10-year-old illegal land denotification case against him.

Yediyurappa was accused of being involved in the alleged illegal allotment of 24 acres of government land to private individuals at a loss to the taxpayer.

A special court was directed by the Karnataka High Court to proceed on the basis of a charge sheet filed by the Lokayukta in 2012.

A bench led by Chief Justice SA Bobde also issued a notice on plea file by Yediyurappa in which he had challenged the Karnataka High Court's order that had asked a special court to take note of the allegations and proceed on the basis of a charge sheet filed by the Lokayukta in 2012.

As per the Karnataka Lokayukta charge sheet, Yediyurappa abused his position to illegally cancel government acquisition of land for industrial purposes. Former minister Katta Subramanya Naidu was also named in the charge sheet.

The land, which was acquired by the Karnataka Industrial Area Development Board in 2006 to set up a hardware park in Bengaluru, was denotified and released to private individuals.

In December last year, the Karnataka High Court had dismissed Yediyurappa's petition seeking to quash criminal proceedings against him in the case.
