Karnataka: An increase of Rs 2.89 per unit with the promise of free electricity!

Bangalore: A big ruckus has started amidst the promise of free electricity by the newly elected Congress government of Karnataka. In fact, the Congress had promised to give 200 units of free electricity to the citizens at the time of elections, which the party has fulfilled after forming the government. But, with this, the Siddaramaiah government has just announced to increase the price of electricity by Rs 2.89 per unit from this month (June). That is, if the people of Karnataka spend even one unit more electricity than the 200 unit slab, then they will have to pay the bill at the rate of Rs 2.89 per unit more from this month. This additional cost is fuel and power purchase cost adjustment (FPPCA) and includes dues from April. The FPPCA for this January could not be implemented in March due to billing issues and paucity of time.

The same FPPCA will be levied at Rs 1.49 per unit from June. Also, there has been an increase of 70 paise + 70 paise i.e. Rs 1.40 from April and June, due to which the total price increase, if one crosses the given 200 units, will be rs 2.89 per unit more. The significant increase in the monthly electricity bills issued by power supply companies (ESCOM) across Karnataka on Monday (June 5) surprised thousands of citizens of the state. For June, ESCOMS has seen a steep increase in fixed charges ranging from Rs 50 to Rs 75 depending on the load consumed in the electricity bills generated.

At the same time, the BJP has also criticized the Congress government for increasing the power tariff by Rs 2.89 per unit. At the same time, people have also protested in Bengaluru, Chikkaballapur, Mysuru, Davangere and some other parts of the state. The protesters have alleged that the policies of the Congress are contradictory, where it is giving free electricity, on the other hand, it has increased the electricity rates.
