MOSCOW: Russian military experts have discovered new evidence of the US Department of Defense's (DOD) involvement in the development of biological weapons in Ukraine. Defence Ministry official Igor Konashenkov claimed that while reviewing documents, Russian experts on radiation, chemical, and biological protection discovered new information indicating the DOD's direct involvement in the production of biological weapons components in Ukraine, Russian Times reports. The Ministry will publish actual documents demonstrating that the Pentagon created and approved the U-Pi-2 biological project in the near future, according to the official. The main purpose of this study, according to Konashenkov, was to conduct a molecular investigation of particularly severe illnesses that are indigenous to Ukraine. "In order to obtain new anthrax strains, this investigation required sampling the virus in old cattle burial grounds." Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov had previously stated that Russia will demand that the problem of biological laboratories in Ukraine be addressed within the context of the Convention on the Prohibition of Biological and Toxin Weapons.
