As strong European indices buoyed sentiments, the BSE Sensex pared losses and ended almost 300 points higher than the day's low on Tuesday. Benchmark indices started the day lower, following the negative handover from Wall Street and other Asian equities, which were mainly lower. Finally, the Sensex fell 166 points, or 0.29 percent, to 58,117.09, while the Nifty50 index down 43.35 points, or 0.25 percent, to 17,324.90. In today's trade, auto, PSU bank, FMCG, and realty companies were among the worst losers. ITC was the Nifty's biggest loss, falling 2.90 percent, followed by Bajaj Finance and Kotak Mahindra Bank, which both sank 2 and 1.78 percent each. Other Nifty declines included Bajaj Finserv, Sun Pharma, Mahindra and Mahindra, HDFC, Bajaj Auto, HDFC Bank, Ultratech Cement, and Suzuki. The Nifty's top gainer was Power Grid Corp, which gained 3.84 percent, followed by Divis Labs and Nestle, which gained 2.27 percent and 1.35 percent, respectively. Other Nifty gainers were Dr Reddy's Lab, Axis Bank, UPL, IndusInd Bank, Hindalco, Adani Ports, ONGC, and ICICI Bank. The BSE Smallcap index was up 0.05 percent versus the benchmark Sensex, while the BSE Midcap index was down 0.37 percent. Today's market breadth was positive; out of the 3,425 equities traded on the BSE, 1,805 gained, 1,503 declined, and 117 remained unchanged.
