SHIVAMOGGA: Commercial flight operations have commenced at the Shivamogga airport in Karnataka. On Thursday, August 31, flight activities were inaugurated as an IndiGo aircraft from Bangalore successfully landed at the airport. Key dignitaries partook in this milestone event, including Karnataka Minister M B Patil, esteemed BJP leader and former chief minister B S Yediyurappa, and Lok Sabha member from Shivamogga B Y Raghavendra. These notable individuals were passengers on the inaugural flight to the district headquarters town. "This marks a pivotal moment," expressed Minister Patil, who oversees Large and Medium Industries as well as Infrastructure Development. He shared his sentiments just prior to embarking on the flight in Bengaluru. Patil also highlighted the substantial demand for flight tickets, as bookings have already been made for the upcoming three weeks. Shivamogga airport was formally inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 27, coinciding with the 80th birthday of Yediyurappa. This holds special significance as Shivamogga is the hometown of the Karnataka BJP stalwart, a four-time Chief Minister. The airport's development incurred an approximate cost of Rs 450 crore. The passenger terminal building has the capacity to handle up to 300 passengers per hour, according to officials. This strategic addition is anticipated to greatly enhance connectivity and accessibility not only for Shivamogga but also for the surrounding areas within the Malnad region of Karnataka. Other distinguished passengers on this inaugural flight included former Deputy Chief Minister K S Eshwarappa and former Minister Araga Jnanendra, both of whom hail from the district.
