New Delhi: Several single-use plastic products including sticks in candy and ice cream will be banned from January 1, 2022. This was stated by the government in the monsoon session of Parliament on Friday. In addition, a number of items including plastic cups, glasses and leaves will be banned from July next year, which are widely used. Replying to a question on the phased ban on single use plastic, Minister of State for Environment Ashwani Choubey said in Parliament that as per the draft notification issued this year, production, import, stock, distribution, sale and use of some identified single use plastic items will be banned from January 1, 2022. Plastic ear cleaners, plastic sticks for balloons, splatter plastic sticks, chocolates and plastic sticks in ice cream, decorative thermocol will be banned from January 1. Plastic items with single use such as plates, cups, glasses, spoons, knives, stretches, containers, lids, trays, plastics/PVC banners (less than 100 microns) are likely to be banned by July next year.
