Slovenia reopens embassy in Ukrainian capital Kiev

Slovenia's embassy in Kiev has reopened after it evacuated all of its diplomats from Ukraine on February 26, two days after Russia launched its full-scale invasion.

The Embassy was reopened on Monday by temporary charge d'affaires Bostjan Lesjak, while Slovenian Ambassador to Ukraine Tomaz Mencin continues to work from Rzeszow, Poland, which is close to the Ukrainian border, according to a statement from the Foreign Ministry in Ljubljana. "Upon arriving in Kiev, Lesjak said that he can hear alarms and detonations in the distance, but that the life of the people who remained in Kiev continues as normal,"

On March 15, Slovenian Prime Minister Janez Jansa visited Kiev with his Polish and Czech counterparts to voice their support for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

"We've returned. In front of the building, the Slovenian and European flags float once more (embassy). When the team arrived in Kiev yesterday, they witnessed a large number of residents returning to the city "On Monday, Jansa said on his Twitter account.

On Monday, a government spokesman indicated that roughly 7,000 Ukrainian refugees have applied for temporary protection in Slovenia, which is sandwiched between Austria, Hungary, Croatia, and Italy.
