Former India team captain Manitombi Singh passes away

Manitombi Singh, a former defender of the Indian football team and captain of Mohun Bagan, died on Sunday at the age of 39. Sources associated with the club said that he breathed his last on Sunday morning in his ancestral village near Imphal, Manipur. He was suffering from the disease for a long time. Manitombi Singh's family has a child of 8 years in addition to his wife. The club posted on Twitter, "The Mohun Bagan family is deeply shocked by the untimely death of former club captain Manitombi Singh. Our condolences to the family at this difficult time. May his soul rest in peace. ''

Manitombi was a key member of coach Stephen Constantine's Indian UNDER-23 team that won the LG Cup in 2003 by defeating Vietnam 3–2 in Ho Chi Minh City. It was India's first international title win after winning the 8-nation tournament in Singapore in 1971.

Manitombi has represented India at the 2002 Busan Asian Games. He made his debut for Mohun Bagan in 2003 and under his captaincy in 2004, the team became the winner of the All Airlines Gold Cup. He last played in the Manipur State League in 2015-16.
