Sr. Punjab Police official arrested for taking Rs 1 cr bribe

CHANDIGARH: The Punjab Vigilance Bureau detained Assistant Inspector General of Police Ashish Kapoor on Thursday for accepting a Rs 1 crore bribe in the form of checks while serving as Commandant of the 4th IRB, Pathankot.

Assailants in the case include DSP, Intelligence Pawan Kumar, and ASI Harjinder Singh.

According to a spokeswoman for the Vigilance Bureau, a case has been filed under the Indian Penal Code and the Prevention of Corruption Act. Giving more information, the spokesperson said Kapoor met Poonam Rajan, of Haryana's Kurukshetra, who was being held on judicial remand in a case, while serving as the Superintendent at Central Jail in Amritsar in 2016. At a police station in Zirakpur town, Rajan was being held in police detention together with her mother Prem Lata, brother Kuldeep Singh, and sister-in-law Preeti. Kapoor went to the police station and deceitfully persuaded Rajan's mother to assist her in obtaining release and a court acquittal.

Later, Kapoor in connivance with then Station House OfficerPawan Kumar, and Assistant Sub-Inspector Harjinder Singh got Preeti declared innocent in the case. In lieu of that favour, Kapoor obtained signatures of Prem Lata on different cheques amounting to rupee one crore, deposited them under the names of people known to him, and got them encashed allegedly through Harjinder Singh.
