Mumbai: Police in Maharashtra's Pune have arrested the main accused involved in the theft of Cash of Rs 12.20 crore from ICICI Bank. The police had been searching for the accused for the last two-and-a-half months. The accused has been identified as Altaf Shaikh and around Rs 9 crore was recovered from him, police said. According to the report, the incident took place on July 12 at ICICI Bank located in the Manpada area of Thane.

Along with this, 5 accused including Nilofar, the sister of the accused have been arrested in this case. The police came to know about the entire plan of robbery from these accused and then the officers took action. Manpada police station official said that Altaf Shaikh, a resident of Mumbra, was working as a custodian in the bank. As a custodian, the keys to the bank's locker were kept with him. The official said that Altaf Shaikh had started planning the theft a year ago, in which he understood the flaws in the system and purchased the equipment under the scheme.

During the investigation, the police found that Shaikh opened the bank's vault, enlarged the AC duct, dumped the cash in the dustbin and during this time he also tampered with CCTV cameras, the police officer said. This entire plan also included disabling the alarm system. Later, when the security money of the bank went missing, the bank officials started investigating. After the robbery, Altaf fled and changed his look, police said. According to the report, on most occasions, he used to wear a burqa to hide his identity. Along with this, he had also hidden some of the looted money at the house of his sister Nilofar, who has been arrested by the police as a co-accused in the case. Shaikh was arrested from Pune on Monday, the official said. Before Shaikh, his sister Nilofar and three other accused have been nabbed. However, it is believed that some more people may also be arrested in this case.
