Bhima Koregaon case: SC orders Gautam Navlakha to surrender in 3 weeks

New Delhi: Human rights activists Gautam Navlakha and Anand Teltumbde, accused in Bhima Koregaon violence case, have not got relief from the top court. The court has refused to grant anticipatory bail to both. Both have been asked to surrender within 3 weeks. The Bombay High Court had rejected the anticipatory bail application of both last month. Both have to submit their passports immediately.

It is noteworthy that at present, the Union Home Ministry handed over the investigation of Bhima Koregaon case to the National Investigation Agency (NIA). The Maharashtra government was about to hand over the matter to the SIT, even before the Home Ministry handed over the matter to the NIA. Maharashtra government has objected to the decision of the Ministry of Home Affairs. Maharashtra government home minister Anil Deshmukh had said that the Modi government at the center took this decision without the consent of the state government. The Pune police was investigating the case.

There was violence on 1 January 2018 near Koregaon-Bhima War Memorial in Pune district. The police had registered 58 cases against 162 people. A few days ago NCP chief Sharad Pawar said at an event in Pune that the cases related to the Bhima-Koregaon demonstration would definitely be investigated. The police claimed that violence erupted in Pune on 31 December 2017 due to inflammatory speeches at the Elgar Parishad. Later, some left-leaning activists, including Telugu poets Varavara Rao and Sudha Bhardwaj, were arrested.
