Tamil Nadu: CZA gives clearance for setting up state's fifth zoo.

CHENNAI: The Central Zoo Authority (CZA) has approved the construction of a zoo in Tiruchi, which will be Tamil Nadu's sixth such facility.   The zoo will be built on 30 hectares, according to the Tamil Nadu Forest Department.

According to department sources, the Central Zoo Authority has written an official approval communication to the Tamil Nadu Chief Wildlife Warden. The Forest Department is in the process of obtaining clearance under the Forest Conservation Act because part of the zoo territory falls inside the reserve forest area.

According to Forest Department sources, the CZA permission is contingent on state government allocations and sufficient funding for the zoo's construction and operation. It should be remembered that the zoo project was also pushed forward previously, but was cancelled due to a lack of money.

In its formal approval, the CZA instructed the state Forest Department not to use any animals or resources from current zoos for the new zoo. It also prohibited the acquisition of wild animals for display.
